Basic Technical Skills for Climbing in the Mexican Volcanoes

Previous Experience:

It is essential to have knowledge and previous experience on:

Snow and ice climbing.
The adequate use of ice axe, crampons, and rope.
Self and team arrest.
Self belay.
Decision-making in case of weather changes.
Acclimatization.
Physical and psicological effects of high altitude.
IMPORTANT: Some routes in these Volcanoes are more difficult and require other advanced skills.

Some people say that they have climb these volcanoes without previous experience, proper equipment or training. We DO NOT endorse such actions. Any mountain involves serious risks and must be taken seriously in order to avoid unnecessary injuries or fatalities.

South America Climbing Trips

In addition to the previous skills please consider the following: These trips are for climbers who want to be part of an expeditionary team. It is essential to have previous intermediate or advanced experience in glacial traverse. The route goes through various types of terrain, long distances over "morrena" (consisting of rock and sand) to approach the glaciers, extended glacial traverse, and short climbs over steep walls.

Very good physical condition is essential. Climbers will need to be prepared to complete treks and climbs of several hours long with loaded packs at high elevation. We strongly recommend to participate in a climbing seminar in your home country or take an advanced seminar previous to a climbing trip to South America.
